Dear, Awakening, and Compassionate Children of the Earth,
The Autumnal Equinox is happening! Day and Night are balancing. We can feel the Wheel of the Year turning: the light is different, the sun sets earlier, geese are beginning to head south. It’s time to take a little break from all our hard work, to celebrate and share the fruits of our labors. It’s Harvest Time!
Mother Nature is spilling open and giving us everything she has stored up. A cornucopia of vegetables, fruits and seed bearing flowers are making sure we having plenty to last us over the winter months. Even the leaves are giving back the light they’ve absorbed.
We know that winter is coming and we all feel a little vulnerable at this time of year. It is the better part of human nature that we seek out our family and friends to share with, to give thanks with, to enjoy being alive with.
Throughout all of human history, we Earthlings have celebrated this Giving Season by coming together and sharing what we have with Gratitude. Without Celebration, life can feel very dull and hopeless. Without Gratitude, it’s easy to fall into fear.
Whatever darkness may be menacing your life, find a way to share your gratitude. Even if it’s just calling someone you care about and telling them how grateful you are that they’re in your life.

with the night falling we are saying thank you
we are stopping on the bridges to bow from the railings
we are running out of the glass rooms
with our mouths full of food to look at the sky
and say thank you
we are standing by the water thanking it
standing by the windows looking out
in four directions
back from a series of hospitals back from a mugging
after funerals we are saying thank you
after the news of the dead
whether or not we knew them we are saying thank you
over telephones we are saying thank you
in doorways and in the backs of cars and in elevators
remembering wars and the police at the door
and the beatings on stairs we are saying thank you

in the faces of the officials and the rich
and of all who will never change

with the animals dying around us
taking our feelings we are saying thank you
with the forests falling faster than the minutes
